Sample Itinerary
Please note: While the itinerary presented is an accurate depiction of what your trip will be like, it is only an example. Our trips are real adventures in the outdoors--not pre-packaged tours that happen on a schedule.
DAY 1: Your trip starts at the shores of Blue Mountain Lake. Have lunch, repack gear and get on the water. Paddle across Blue Mountain and Eagle Lake. You will be heading towards your first campsite located on Uptown Lake. The group will discuss their expectations and get to know each other around the campfire.
DAY 2: Rise early and paddle to the west end of Uptown Lake where you will find your first portage. Carry canoes and gear across the trail to the beginning of the Marion River. Paddle down the Marion River and camp at a site near the opening to Racket Lake.
DAY 3: Break camp and paddle north across Racket Lake. Make your way to the portage that leads into Forked Lake. Portage into Forked Lake and head east towards your final campsite.
DAY 4: Spend a lay over day on Forked Lake. Relax in camp, fish or take a day trip to explore the Racket River, Little Forked Lake or the North Bay Stream.
DAY 5: Rise with the sun, have breakfast and paddle to the take out. The trip officially ends after lunch. If you are using our transportation, you can expect to arrive in Albany in the early evening.
Travel, Terrain, Etc...
TERRAIN/ROUTE CHOICES: The Adirondacks lie on the Canadian Shield, and are characterized by exposed granite with a thin layer of top soil--the result of glaciers scraping and grinding 10,000 years ago. Trails and the lakes make this area one of the most accessible in the country. The Adirondacks offer a wide range of route options from very easy to very difficult.
TYPE OF TRAVEL/DISTANCE:You will travel in 17-foot tandem canoes, which hold two to three paddlers, plus all necessary gear. An average day’s travel consists of 3-6 hours of paddling, depending upon the number of portages. Travel distances vary from 6-12 miles per day with the exception of scheduled layover days. Expect 1-2 portages (short trail crossings) per day. The portages tend to be hilly and range from 3/4-1 mile. To protect the environment, WI uses “minimum impact” camping techniques.
WEATHER: Temperatures in the summer months range from 40 F to 95 F. Rainfall can vary, but you should expect at least a day or two of rain.
LODGING/BATHROOM FACILITIES: This is a camping trip. At night, you will sleep in tents. Typically, there are 3 people per 4 person tent (although other arrangements can be made). Bathroom facilities consist of a foldable commode chair or an outhouse. We make every effort to ensure privacy and cleanliness. Bathing is done the "old-fashioned" way--by soaping up and washing with a bucket of water.
GROUP SIZE: The group size ranges from 10-12 participants, plus 2 or more Wilderness Inquiry staff. Each group consists of people of various ages, backgrounds and abilities, including people with disabilities.
CAMP CHORES: WI trips are cooperative in nature. WI staff will assist you in whatever areas you need, however, we ask that you pitch in when you can. Part of the adventure involves participating in daily camp activities such as camp setup, cooking and dishes.
EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING: If you are new to outdoor activities, you need not spend a lot of money on gear. Wilderness Inquiry will provide all necessary canoeing and camping equipment. All you need to provide is your personal gear, such as clothing and a sleeping bag. A detailed equipment list will be sent to you upon confirmation of your participation. If you need to borrow personal gear, that can usually be arranged.
LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: No previous experience is needed to complete this trip.
