adventure leadership program (alp) scout programs youth programs family programs gateway to adventure inclusion training

Three Levels of the Adventure Leadership Program
There are three specialized levels of ALP created to provide quality training for any wilderness skill level. ALPers participate in one of three levels. Each applicant is assessed individually to determine the most appropriate level for her/his participation in ALP. At all levels, ALP will provide a safe, empowering environment and the opportunity to develop technical, leadership, and social skills.

ALPers in all three levels will provide leadership at canoe events throughout the summer season, mostly on weekends. ALPers will work at least 3 days at these events.

Base Camp
Base Camp is geared towards youth with little outdoor and wilderness experience. This course will provide:

  • Basics of camping, canoeing, kayaking, safety, and other outdoor skills
  • Proficiency in gear selection/maintenance and trip planning/preparation
  • Assistant leadership at community canoe workshops
  • Three to four safe and fun outdoor multi-day adventures
  • Leadership training and practice in peer groups

Vista
Vista is geared towards young adults with wilderness experience. Knowledge and demonstration of basic outdoor skills are necessary for the ALP Vista participant. Participants will build on their skills and focus on leadership practice in peer groups. Through wilderness trips and leadership opportunities, this course will provide skills to:

  • Assess group needs, capacities and desires to safely and effectively lead trips
  • Effectively communicate important policies and procedures
  • Proficiently canoe, sea kayak, and navigate
  • Provide basic emergency first aid
  • Effectively pack-in/out for wilderness trips including gear and food
  • Know and practice proper equipment maintenance

Summit
This third phase of the ALP program is geared towards youth who are capable of helping lead wilderness adventures for people of all abilities and all ages. This phase may include full participation in the summer WI Trail Staff Training. Participants will:

  • Take an extended trip to scout new routes in a trip destination
  • Hone wilderness, leadership, and social/emotional skills on wilderness trips
  • Participate as an assistant leader on one or more WI trips
  • Embrace a "servant leadership" ethic (this includes a willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done, including the stamina and personal fortitude to lead groups through all conditions)
  • Serve as mentors for ALPers in Base Camp and Vista
